Independent Optical Service is owned by Andre Tabak, and he has been selling vintage eyewear at the major swap meets in the L.A. area for well over a decade. Andre is easy to recognize, at six feet five inches, light colored reddish hair and wearing Persol sunglasses and a hat, he is a very friendly and popular long term vendor at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Other opticians in the LA area visit Andre to buy their vintage eyewear because the prices are right. Look for the large Eyeglasses hanging in front of his booth.
You can only view a small portion, in the picture, of the vintage eyeglasses that Andre displays. Another advantage buyers have with Andre is that he is a Registered Dispensing Optician, so he can advise you if the vintage frames you choose will be suitable for filling a prescription. Andre only sells high quality vintage and antique eyewear through the swap meets, and does not fill Rx's. Filling your prescription in a vintage frame takes more attention to fabrication details in the workmanship, and you won't find this sort of finesse with the large optical labs that most eye doctors used to generate prescription lens work. Andre will gladly recommend you to a seasoned optician who will watch over your frame and prescription. Fortunately for me, I have a three decade working relationship with Andre, so all the Rx work I generate at Spectacles is personally handled by Andre, himself.
Vintage 60's, 70's and 80's Style Frames.
Every frame in Andre's collection has been glazed with high quality non-prescription lenses that are more scratch resistant and tinted. What is generally not known is that Andre, himself, does all the work with his special edgers. Consequently, if you don't like the color of a tint, than Andre will change it at no cost to you.
Pictured here is just one of many trays that have antique eyewear popular from 1880's through the 1940's. Nose pads were put on the "John Lennon" style metal frames in the 1930,s. Before 1930, horses were the main source of transportation, so the bridge piece rested directly on the nose. This kept the frames closer to the face, and along with the "riding bow" temples that curved around the ear, the eyewear stayed in place. You can contact Andre, at P.O.
