How Do I Measure My Pupillary Distance?

What is Pupillary Distance or PD?

From How Do I Measure My Pupillary Distance: PD is short for pupillary distance, which is the measurement of the distance between the pupils in millimeters. In order to make your eyeglasses custom to your face the optical lab needs to know the distance between your pupils so the center of the eyeglass lens, which holds the clearest vision, sits directly in front of your pupil.

All of the optical sites I recommend have a dedicated page or instruction video on how to measure your own pupillary distance, however the method I employ here suggests a higher reliability from the anecdotal evidence I have collected testing non-optical subjects.

Items needed to measure your own Pupillary Distance (PD)

1. Mirror.
2. An old pair of eyeglasses.
3. A marking pen to place a spot on your lenses (non-permanent type
marker).
4. A ruler that has millimeters, or you can download the pdf file I have below for a "paper millimeter ruler".

How do I measure my pupillary distance?

Begin by sitting in front of a mirror with your pen in hand. While keeping both eyes open cover your left eye with your left hand. Brace your right hand with the pen against your left hand to help steady your aim with the marker.

Now, while keeping your right eye looking straight ahead, gently place a mark over the pupil, or dark portion in the center of your eye.

For the left eye we do the very same procedure. Cover your right eye with your right hand. Brace your left hand with the pen against your right hand to help steady your aim. (I am right handed, so this was is a little awkward with my non-dominate hand) Again, while looking straight into the mirror place a mark over the pupil. If you miss the mark no big deal, you can always start over until you are satisfied with the placement.

Place your ruler over the spots and measure the distance between the marks to the nearest millimeter. In this case the nearest reading is 58 millimeters. I rechecked this self measurement with an instrument called a corneal reflex pupillometer, designed to be the most accurate way to meassure a PD, and found the reading to be 58 millimeters too. This is "how do I measure my pupillary distance" by myself accurately when other less conventional means are not available.

If you don't have a millimeter ruler you can download a ruler from a pdf file to measure the pupil distance. When you print the page be sure in the "Page Handling" Section of the print screen you have the "Page scaling: Reduce to Printer Margins", and than print the page. You should verify the correctness of the paper ruler sizing with a standard inch ruler. The millimeter ruler at the top of the page should measure a shade under 5 7/8 inches.
